Conceptual Art; Provocation To The Common Man Psyche

Before we venture in to this artistic discourse one must first contemplate this question, “What is conceptual art?” Conceptual art may be define as any art form that the emphasis is placed on the process rather than the artwork itself. In other words, the concept behind the work is of paramount importance than the created work itself. From a historical stand point, it is believed that this controversial movement emerged as an art movement in the mid- 1960s and was very popular from that time to mid- 1970s.

For us to grasp a better understanding of conceptual art at this moment, I do believed it is a requirement to familiarize oneself with the ‘so-called” father of the movement Marcel Duchamp. He is best known for his 1917 work titled Fountain, a porcelain urinal that he allegedly claim that he found at a plumbing supplier which he signed “R. Mutt 1917”. This was said to be the cataclysm of conceptualism. Another interesting art work was an Installation by Tracey Emin done in 1998.Thre are lot more conceptual arts and artists out there who are currently sparking debate.

The more current debate in the art world came from this highly controversial artwork, yes that highly creative banana at The art Basel. This the ordinary man believes is not art, to him; this is a child playing or a farmer decided to be funny. Furthermore do not mention the price if you don’t want him go get angry; remember his basic need is far more important.

Some artists may argue passionately that notion of conceptual art is based on the idea of artists simply trying to shy away from the rigid rudiments that fine arts required. In other words conceptual art forms are products of some rather lazy artists, busy trying to cheat the system. In addition to that they believed that the conceptual art form and artists also help to put forth the idea that anyone could be seen as an artist.

A lot of students of the art, especially those at the high school level see this movement of the art as a troublesome thing to grasp. Most see it as a waste of time, and as artists trying to fool the mass. Some see it as people merely been mad and expressing their inability to cope with what art truly requires. Others also argued that art requires creativity while other believed that art is much more than creativity. They are others who strongly believe that this art form is pure garbage.

To further complicate the matter one would believe that all art work carry some form of concept.

The notion of one fully grasping a thorough understanding of conceptual art should not be seen as a bother. Bearing in mind the fundamental meaning of this type of art form. Owing to the fact that this take away from the normal school of aesthetics and the materials required to do so.

But who say the common man mind is not working? Critical thinking allows us to have many different views on a topic. Some we will agreed with, others we beg to differ. Art or not art to us conceptual art is here to stay.
